Your Action of the Day 5/30

Choose an action that corresponds with your ‘activist priority’ and do your bit to resist today! Every little action helps and it’s the little things that can have the most impact. Friendly reminder: Try not to choose more than one or two!

Advocate Against Violence (Anti-Violence)

Action 1: Oppose selling American weapons to countries that commit war crimes.
Call: Your Senators
Script: Hi. I’m from _ZIP_ calling about the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. I am deeply concerned that selling arms to Saudi Arabia will increase civilian deaths, worsen famine, and risk radicalizing Yemenis against America. I would like _NAME_ to sign the joint resolution proposed by Rand Paul, Chris Murphy, and Al Franken to disapprove the 110 billion dollar arms sale to Saudi Arabia.
Note: The J.R. does not yet have a number assigned. Will update.

Advocate for Black Lives Matter

Advocate for Climate Change Awareness/Action

I believe in creating a healthy planet for future generations.
Action 3: Oppose opening national monuments to energy development.
Visit: Click Here, click dark blue Comment Now! button, upper right.
Script: I am writing in response to executive order 13792. (Share how you use or enjoy national monuments.) Americans are creative and can meet energy needs without destroying the purity of wild spaces. The assumption that our national monuments aren’t profitable is false. Annually, the outdoor recreation economy supports 7.6 million jobs and generates $887 billion in consumer spending each year. (Say why you want these spaces to be preserved.)
Note: Cut-and-pasted messages will be disregarded, so make yours unique.

Action 8: Support Student Access to books and school materials.
First Book is a nonprofit organization whose sole mission is getting books and classroom resources to children from low-income schools. First Book has already “distributed more than 160 million books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families.” Provide a monetary donation here, help them fundraise here, and sign up for updates by clicking here

Action 9: Support arts education
When schools are subjected to budget cuts, arts programs are often the first things to go. And with a Secretary of Education who
doesn’t support public schools and a President who reportedly desires to eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts, we need to vigilantly protect these programs even more than we already do. Based in Los Angeles, The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation is one of the national organizations you can help. By providing musical instruments to underfunded K-12 schools (that frequently serve economically-disadvantaged kids), music programs are able to survive. Go here to donate a new or gently-used instrument and learn how to volunteer, and go here to give a monetary donation.

Action 10: Advocate for kids’ rights to a quality public education.
Call: Your three MoCs (lookup or leave message). Script: “Hi. I’m a constituent from _ZIP_ concerned about public education in the upcoming budget. I am calling to let _NAME_ know I want three things:

  1. That no taxpayer money funds any religious education.
  2. That we honor all agreements to students working off loans in service programs.
  3. And, that we increase funding to high-poverty schoolsand after-school programs. Thanks!

Advocate for Election Integrity/Swing Left/Bipartisanship

Action 11: Call for Jeff Sessions to step down as Attorney General.
Call: Your 3 MoCs (lookup or leave message).
Script: Hi. I’m from _ZIP_ calling with concerns about our leadership’s integrity. Jeff Sessions failed to reveal meetings with Russian diplomats during his security screening process. I would like _NAME_ to join Senator Schumer (D-NY) and Representative Lieu (D-CA) in calling for his resignation. Thanks.

Action 12: Support Voting Rights Advancement FairVote and VRA for Today are two different organizations working to improve our democracy via improved voting rights. Help support these organizations by checking out their resources and advocacy pages.

Action 14: Swing Left (This action takes more than a few minutes, but very helpful!)
Act: Use your writing or research talents by contributing to Swing Left.  Swing Left

Advocate for Healthcare

I believe in quality, affordable healthcare for all Americans. By June 2nd.
Action 15: Tell your senators what you do want your health coverage to include.    Call: Both of your senators, red or blue (lookup or leave message).  Script: Hi. I’m from _ZIP_ calling about healthcare. The current bill is not healthcare, so I want my senator to fight for five important things:

  1. No gender discrimination.
  2. No lifetime caps.
  3. To cover all pre-existing conditions.
  4. To cost less than $X per month per person.
  5. And to insist health insurance companies decrease costs.
  6. Tell a story about why one of these is important to you, personally.

Finally, if Sen. _NAME_ supports Republican plans to repeal the ACA, I will work hard to elect his/her opponent in the next election cycle. Thanks!

Action 16: Continue asking Governor Jerry Brown to support California’s bill for single-payer healthcare.
Script: ‘I am calling from _ZIP_ to express my support for California’s bill for single-payer healthcare. I, as a constituent, ask you to continue your support and advocacy on behalf of this bill.’

Action 17: Voice your objection to the all-male senate healthcare group.
Write: Sen. Mitch McConnell, 317 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510 Script: Not everyone is at the table to discuss health care, Sen. McConnell. 51% of the US population is female. 37% is not white. 19% has a disability. More than 3% is LGBT. By these statistics, your committee should have six women, four minorities, two disabled people, and one gay person. A group of white, straight men could harm those excluded from the conversation. Please make it right.

Advocate for Immigrant Rights

Support: Border Angels
Border Angels is based in San Diego — incredibly close to where “the wall” would be erected. The organization helps save the lives of migrants making dangerous journeys to the states, educates undocumented folks about their rights and legal options, and provides free legal services to immigrants. Go here to donate.

Support: RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services) RAICES is based in Texas, and helps immigrant and refugee families receive free to low-cost legal services. You can donate or sponsor a family in need.

Action 18: Speak up for asylum seekers enduring inhumane conditions in our country.
Donate: Project South is a legal and advocacy group targeting Georgia’s detention centers. Your support helps them advocate and litigate on behalf of the voiceless. Visit:

Action 19: Oppose ICE funding until it has more oversight (hat tip).
Call: All 3 MoCs (lookup or leave message). Script: I am calling from _ZIP_ to express concerns about Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE’s tactics are making communities and workplaces less safe. This is unacceptable. This agency needs oversight and accountability in its duties, and clear deportation priorities. I am asking _NAME_ to not approve any funds to ICE until these two changes are made. Thanks.

Advocate for Freedom of Knowledge

I believe in the Constitutional right to a free press.
Action 20: Support journalists.
Ben Jacobs, the journalist attacked last week, requested that the fundraiser to buy him new glasses go to The Committee to Protect Journalists.
Donate: To the GoFundMe campaign or directly to CPJ here

Advocate for the LGBTQ Community

Action 21: Oppose taxpayer-funded discrimination of LGBTQ+ youth.
Call: All 3 MoCs (lookup or leave message).
Script: I am from _ZIP_ and am concerned that Betsy DeVos’ would have my tax dollar fund schools that discriminate against gay kids, which could increase the risk of youth suicide. We need all schools to welcome all kids. I am asking _NAME_ to support the use of public money only for public education—not the voucher system and not religious education.

Action 22: Sign up to volunteer at SF Pride for Indivisible

We need to brainstorm ideas for fundraising! Here is a listing of the necessary elements needed for the rally: trained peacemakers, insurance, an appropriate sound system, reserved parking spaces, port a potties (1 per 100 persons), crowd barriers, EMT, park ranger services, 2-3 tents, printing and a few tables, several chairs.

Action 27: Check out our event calendar Click Here
